Queensyrsche's guitar player said "Rock's pretty much dead" in an interview with Ultimate Guitar a few years ago. The comment secton was filled with hate, probably because everyone who plays guitar doesn't wanna believe it, or maybe they are not visionaries like Steve Jobs, or they just don't really listen to the radio or go out on weekends.
I mean, seriously, just turn on the radio. What will you hear? Fall Out Boy (who don't even have guitar sound at this point). Royal Blood. New Metallica. Greeta Van Fleet (a Led Zeppelin cover band in terms of their sound...) I mean, don't get me wrong. I love almost all of these, and Metallica is still kicking ass. Foo Fighters are still kicking ass (and that new music video shows it!) real time. But they belong to the old school of rock, and have probably continued making music in order to pay their bills. New modern metal bands are still there, and surprisingly coming really quick to the scene (Fearless Records, Eclipse Records, riserecords sign great new metalcore/nu-metal/djent bands on A DAILY BASIS!), but that iconic rock sound that Led Zeppelin or AC/DC had? I don't think you can hear that anymore. I'm not just talking sound-wise, I'm reffering to the rebelious mindset and provocative lyrics, coupled with the raw, dirty guitar sound.
Sure, sure, the music is evolving. Currently, it is just in to be a Soundcloud rapper. That's just a fact. Put on some face tatoos, find a sample beat, write some lyrics and you have a pretty high chance of becoming well-known. Trap is at its peak right now. EDM in general, the clubs are just screaming, and people are dancing like there's no tomorrow.
It's all fine though. The rock era is going to come again. And it will become extinct again. Evolution is happening and it it all good... As long as there is creativity, and we have musicians like J Cole, Joyner Lucas and Logic who are spreading a positive messages and are not afraid to tell the truth... Hey, I can't complain.
